  4.     We long-suffering Angelenos had a right to expect more from
  5. our public servants than that piece of foolishness adopted by the
  6. south coast air-quality-management district (ENVIRONMENT, March
  7. 27). The 5,500-page plan is surrealistic: a 70% cut in
  8. smog-producing emissions by the year 2000 and electric cars by
  9. 2020. It would be remarkable if we could achieve these goals.

  14.     With 20 million-plus autos belching fumes into the air of
  15. California, it's about time we tried to solve the problem of air
  16. pollution. However, it might be easier to reverse the course of the
  17. sun than switch over to relatively clean methanol or electric cars.
  18. But what if it worked? You could see the sky! You could breathe the
  19. air again! And with electric autos you could even hear the birds.
